How Their Brains Process Screens Differently Than You Think

They experience AI as relational, not transactional.
Adults understand that ChatGPT is a tool. Kids? They develop parasocial attachments. They thank it. They ask it personal questions.

“My kid will tell me if something feels wrong online.”
No, they won’t. And it’s not personal.
For something to feel wrong, a child’s brain has to:
Recognize a threat
Connect it to past experience or taught values
Overcome the fear of consequences (Will I lose my device? Get in trouble? Will friends find out I told?)
That’s a lot of executive function for a brain still under construction.
Most kids don’t tell you because:
They don’t realize it’s wrong (yet)
They think they can handle it themselves

They don’t have the language to explain what happened

The Path Forward: How to Actually Talk to Your Kid
You can’t have one “big talk” about AI and screens and hope it sticks.
This has to be an ongoing conversation, woven into daily life.
And it starts with creating a space where your kid feels safe telling you the truth — even when the truth is “I don’t know” or “I messed up.”
Start at the Dinner Table
You’ve heard “family dinner” advice a thousand times, but here’s why it matters: the dinner table is one of the few places to practice low-stakes, judgment-free conversation.
No screens. No distractions. Just talking.
And when kids get used to being asked open-ended questions about their day, they start to believe you actually want to hear the answers.
That trust? That’s what makes them tell you about the weird DM or the chatbot that said something creepy.
The rule:
Ask questions you don’t already know the answers to.
Listen more than you talk.
Resist the urge to problem-solve immediately.
Age-Specific Questions That Build Critical Thinking
Ages 8–9: Building Awareness
At this age, you’re teaching them to notice what they experience.
Try asking:
“What did you see online today that was fun, weird, or confusing?”
“If you asked ChatGPT or Alexa something, did it make sense?”
“Have you ever wondered if something online was real or fake?”
Ages 10–12: Developing Judgment
Now you’re teaching evaluation and skepticism.
Try asking:
“Do you think AI ever gets things wrong? How would you know?”
“If a video seems shocking, how could you tell if it’s real or edited?”
“What’s the difference between something being popular online and being true?”
“Have you ever felt like a game was trying to keep you playing longer?”
Bonus: Ask them to teach you something.
“Can you show me how that AI thing works? I want to understand what you’re seeing.”
When kids are in the teaching role, they notice more — and think more deeply.
Model Curiosity, Not Fear
Your kids are watching how you react to technology.
If you either blindly trust it or demonize it, they’ll mirror that.
Instead, model critical thinking out loud:
“ChatGPT just told me this — I’ll check another source because AI can make mistakes.”
“This video looks wild — I’m going to see where it came from.”
“I just got an email that seems off. Want to help me figure out if it’s a scam?”
When you show that even adults pause and question, you’re teaching the most important skill of all: healthy skepticism.
